Alliance tries again for Blackpool

Six services a day to Euston proposed

Operator Grand Central has announced plans for a new rail operation between Blackpool and London, which could begin in 2017. It would operate the service on behalf of Alliance Rail Holdings; both companies are part of the Arriva Group.

The operator is to seek approval for the open access operation from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) and will shortly consult the rail industry on its plans.

It would provide six return services a day between London and Blackpool, operated by a fleet of new six-car Alstom Pendolino trains. The company says the operation would also see 120 new jobs created.

Alliance recently had a proposal for open access services on the West Coast main line from London to Blackpool and London to Leeds via Manchester Victoria rejected by the ORR, chiefly due to concerns about revenue abstraction from existing operators. It also has an application lodged for services on the East Coast main line, under the name Great North Eastern Railway (GNER).
