C-DAS installation on SWT

Trials to begin on West of England route in the autumn

South West Trains has announced that it is shortly to start fitment of the GreenSpeed Connected Driver Advisory System (C-DAS) on several of its train fleets. The operator says it will be the first time such a system has been used in the UK.

The system collects real time data from a range of sources. This is used to calculate the ideal speed of the train in order to reach its destination on time, which is then relayed to the driver. The system will be fitted to SWT’s Class 444, 450 and 458 EMU fleets and its Class 159 DMUs, and forms part of the operator’s plans for offering a more frequent service on its main line routes out of Waterloo.

The contract to introduce the technology has been awarded to a consortium comprising rolling stock engineering consultancy ESG and IT and engineering company Cubris. Installation is expected to start in May, with the system fully operational in 2016. SWT says the first pilot will begin on its West of England line services from London to Salisbury and Exeter in the autumn. Fleet deployment will take place gradually as drivers are trained and train installations are completed.

Christian Roth, Engineering Director for South West Trains, said: ‘We are investing millions of pounds right across the network to provide extra space, refurbish and improve our trains as well as upgrading our infrastructure to ensure more of our trains run on time. The introduction of this ground breaking technology is part of that ongoing commitment and is a major step forward towards improving one of Europe’s busiest networks.’
