A new transport interchange at South Shields, including a relocated Tyne & Wear Metro station, opened on Sunday 4 August.
The £21 million facility also includes a modern bus station and is expected to be used by 7.5 million passengers a year. Access to bus services is on ground floor level, with the Metro gatelines and platform on the first floor. A new concourse includes a Nexus TravelShop, café, two lifts, escalators and stairs to the Metro platform. The old Metro station will now be demolished.
The landmark building was designed by The Harris Partnership and build by Bowmer and Kirkland, and has been handed over to North East Transport Authority Nexus to manage. The project received £9.4 million from the Local Growth Deal through the North East Local Enterprise Partnership.
