A public consultation on the designs for a redeveloped University station in Edgbaston, Birmingham is planned later this summer, while the West Midlands Combined Authority has published a Prior Information Notice ahead of the procurement of a design and build contract for the redevelopment.

West Midlands Rail Executive and Transport for West Midlands are leading the project, aimed at creating a station capable of handling 7.2 million passengers a year. The new station is expected to be open by the end of 2021, in time for the 2022 Commonwealth Games when the adjacent University of Birmingham hosts hockey and squash events. A new station building will incorporate new passenger facilities while a wide footbridge will connect the platforms and provide direct access across the canal to the university campus.
