West Midlands Trains has unveiled the first pictures of a completion Class 196 DMU, built by CAF for services within its West Midlands Railway brand.
WMT has ordered 26 ‘196s’ from CAF – 14×4-car and 12×2-car units, financed by Corelink Rail Infrastructure. The operator says the trains will be used to increase capacity on the busy route between Hereford and Birmingham. The initial build is taking place at CAF’s factory in Spain but this will later switch to its Newport plant in South Wales. The first train is due to arrive in the UK in the spring, with entry into passenger service during the second half of 2020.
