Avanti West Coast has awarded Alstom a £642 million seven-year deal to refurbish and maintain the 56-strong Class 390 Pendolino fleet.
Alstom built the Pendolinos, which were introduced by previous franchisee Virgin Trains from January 2003. The contract includes a £127 million refurbishment, which will focus on on-board facilities. The work will take places at Alstom’s Transport and Technology Centre in Widnes, which has just completed a repaint of all 56 Pendolinos, with 100 jobs created.
The ongoing maintenance will continue at the existing depots at Polmadie (Glasgow), Edge Hill (Liverpool), Longsight (Manchester), Oxley (near Wolverhampton) and Wembley, with new maintenance programmes promised to improve performance.
